Say what you like about Hamilton. This is where I live the life I love – cafés and restaurants, arts groups and orchestra performances, book clubs and business groups, and scenery that takes your breath away. A quick leap over the Bombay Hills takes us to events which are too big for a small city like ours and it’s an easy foray into other North Island destinations. Please join me each week to discover the pleasures and treasures that give life meaning.

hello – I found your blog after ‘googling’ my elderly father while chatting with him on the phone this afternoon from Perth WA. You have really made his day! Dad’s an artist. – Maurice Brookes. He’s not been well lately (he’s 82) but he still lives for, and loves painting. I read your blog to him about how his painting was your favourite that you saw at a small exhibition in Palmerston North’s Square Edge – back in 2012 (I was visiting NZ then and took Dad through the Gorge for the opening day). I remember that exhibition well. Such talented people. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you. Dad doesn’t have an online presence unfortunately. But he was thrilled to know that someone really liked his work. Best regards, Yolanda Brookes.
Lovely to hear from you Yolanda! I can’t remember the original post, but I hope I mentioned the pleasure I gain daily from a Maurice Brookes’ painting I bought at the Waikato Diocesan School for Girls art auction maybe nine years ago. I often linger on it, wondering whether the mood the artist evokes in me is the mood intended by the artist. I have not met your father. However, I would be grateful if you would pass on to him the respect I have for his work.
